Restoring a Frame

These paintings are part of a series about art restoration in post-Katrina New Orleans.

Swamp


Several walls in my house had to be repaired because of the water damage from Katrina. Underneath the new wall and the mold was a beautifully aged wallpaper, probably from the 1920s. It made me think of the layers of living spaces, their histories hidden within a frame.


Grow Up Tall


Operation Helping Hands of New Orleans and Catholic Charities employ my drawing and design as their official letterhead, cover page and banner used in all rebuilding project communications.

Dinner

Several people contacted me about the detail of the figures in this painting (shown below). I plan to make a separate painting using this scene because I think the image is monumental even floating in such a large space in the original painting. I like the background because it is simultaneously flat and violently active, the pattern is balanced but the texture is uneven. The painting is very effective in person, the paint's physicality is particular. The pattern invokes the mystery of the scene and the expressions of the figures.
